What are smart keyless remote entry systems?
Remote keyless entry, sometimes called passive entry, allows for several benefits. The biggest perk of a keyless system is the convenience it provides. Loaded down with groceries? You can still open the trunk with a wave of your foot, depending on the version of keyless entry installed on your vehicle. Moreover, you never have to struggle to get the key into the lock, just press a button and go. The increased security keyless entry provides is another big perk. The key has electronics inside that must be authenticated by your vehicle before it will start the engine or even allow access to the interior. Not all Keyless Systems are passive, but all Passive Entry systems are keyless. This is how it works. Passive Keyless is when your keys can remain in your pocket (or purse) and then you touch an area to unlock and lock the doors, or wave your foot to open the trunk. One perk of passive entry systems is that they generally include Keyless Ignition, which allows drivers to start and drive their car without the key fob ever leaving their pocket.
To be clear, Keyless Ignition and Remote Start are different features, even if they do similar things. Keyless Ignition lets you start and drive your car without using a standard key. Remote Ignition lets drivers start their car through their key fob. Remote Start is helpful during extreme temperatures such as very hot or very cold days by allowing you to start the car and help cool it off during the summer. You’ll never get into a cold vehicle again, simply use the Remote Start and warm it up before you drive away.
A Smart Key is an electronic way (fob, smartphone app, key card) that is used to access a car remotely. The buttons for your Keyless Entry, Remote Start, and other functions are usually located on the Smart Key itself. The Smart Key sends radio signals to the car to open the trunk, lock the doors, and so on. Some Smart Keys are even connected to the anti-theft system and will not let the car start without them.
